Day 9 The day started in Ted’s basement. We didn’t have a really good way of removing all of the mud that had piled up. We did the best we could filling trash cans and hauling them up the stairs one by one. This needless to say was a back breaking task that took three guys about 4 hours. Meanwhile our inspection of the rest of the home had revealed quite a few areas of drywall would need to be taken out. We started with the pantry, which was quite large. After removing the drywall we found that it was hung over the top of plaster. Plaster is a lot harder to remove than drywall. We had to use a circular saw to cut through the metal mesh holding the corners together. This was a huge safety issue because the metal was old and very sharp. To help with this I went to the local hardware store and got some thick leather gardening gloves for everyone to wear. The process went a lot faster after that and pretty soon all of the plaster was removed. To our surprise the wall studs were attached to the original stone walls. Ted said that back when the house was built it was common to have the pantry made with stone. Back one hundred and thirty years ago there wasn’t air conditioning so they used stone to keep their produce and meat cool.
