Many people don’t know anything about mold and this stigma ignites emotions, imaginations and misguided assumptions. While it is true that all molds can effect your health at high toxicity levels. It is not true that all molds cause permanent damage or certain death. As a matter of fact many healthcare lawsuits attributive to mold are fruitless for the damage seeker. This is because it is very hard to prove unproven adverse effects on your health potentially caused from mold exposure. Sickness from mold exposure can be deadly in infant and elderly people and are health problems associated with mold but without being able to name it as the cause of death. Which is what makes mold so difficult to implicate. There are certain types of black mold that have been documented killers and cause of brain damage in some people and animals.
Actually there is a rather famous case or person rather incited by Ed MacMahon himself. For those of you that do not know who he is, he is the voice introducing Johnny Carson on the Carson show for those oh so many wonderful years of comedy. He was a staple in American Society as a very well liked public figure. Ed filed a lawsuit in 2002 against his insurance company claiming he, his wife, and his dog suffered from mold infestations that spread throughout his Beverly Hills mansion from a water damage that occurred in his home. Apparently the water damage was not cleaned up properly by the contractors who were working on his home at the time of the leak. Ed MacMahon was seeking 20 million dollars in his lawsuit. You might say Ed was not happy. Unfortunately his family dog Muffin died causing him and his family immense stress and disorder. It was less than a year later that the lawsuit was settled and Mr. MacMahon received 7 million dollars for his troubles and it was proven that the mold caused Muffin’s death. The damages were said to have been caused by multiple parties not doing their jobs that attributed to the escalation of the toxicity of the mold and the adverse health problems it caused to the family and the death of their poor dog Muffin. Ed died 7 years after his initial sickness from the mold that were not attributed to the mold but other health problems. But it would make you wonder if this was the start of his downward health problems as no formal cause of death was given. This is the case with many infant and elderly deaths.
Multiple parties causing this reminds me that there are multiple variables that attribute to the success of mold growth. Does anyone know what the four variables are? Well they are moisture/humidity, temperature, present mold spores, and a degradable material commonly digested by mold commonly called substrate. Well moisture and humidity we all know to be the food source of the mold and that without it mold cannot grow. Temperature is a very important factor as well as mold can and cannot grow in certain temperatures. As far as mold spores being present we should all know that that is most always the case. And as far as material for mold to digest well there are many materials it will grow on but there is one material, for sure, that it will not grow on. Can anyone guess what that is??? It is Concrete. Mold cannot grow on concrete. Now you will find mold growing on dirt or other material attached to concrete but not on concrete. Also not only do you have to have all of these variables but you also have to have at least 72 hours of these combined conditions for mold to start growing. It can, however, happen in some cases less than that.
While mold can cause many problems it can also be stopped before it does by the right company. A company you can trust. ServiceMaster SRQ is that Company and we would be proud to serve you.
