Inspection & Findings

Inspection identified sewage-related contamination affecting flooring and materials along the lower portions of the walls.

The photographs document deterioration and contamination behind the baseboard area as well as removal of affected carpet and padding to expose the underlying concrete floor.

Because porous materials can absorb contaminated water, simply drying everything in place would not have provided an appropriate remediation approach.

The findings supported selective removal of affected materials, detailed cleaning of remaining surfaces, and structural drying of the exposed areas.

Contaminated Material Removal

Materials affected by sewage-contaminated water must be evaluated based upon their composition and the extent of exposure.

In this project, affected carpet and related porous materials were removed rather than attempting to dry them in place.

Baseboards and other affected finish materials were also removed where necessary to expose concealed areas along the wall and floor assembly.

Removing these materials provided access to surfaces that otherwise could not have been adequately cleaned or dried.

Sewage Cleanup and Environmental Cleaning

Once affected materials were removed, accessible surfaces within the impacted areas were thoroughly cleaned as part of the remediation process.

Special attention was given to areas along wall bottoms, floor perimeters, and other locations where contaminated water could migrate or become trapped.

The objective was not merely to remove visible debris. The cleaning process was performed to address contamination associated with the sewage loss before the structure proceeded into the drying and restoration phases.

Structural Drying and Moisture Management

Contamination cleanup and structural drying are related but separate parts of sewage-loss remediation.

After contaminated materials were removed and appropriate cleaning procedures completed, remaining structural materials were evaluated for moisture.

Drying equipment was then used as appropriate to reduce residual moisture and stabilize conditions within the affected areas.

This is important because completing contamination cleanup while leaving excessive moisture within structural materials can create additional problems and delay reconstruction.

Why Sewage Backups Require a Different Approach

A clean-water plumbing leak and a sewage backup should not automatically be treated the same way.

Sewage-contaminated water can contain microorganisms and other contaminants. Materials that might potentially be dried and preserved following a clean-water loss may instead require removal when they have been significantly affected by sewage.

The remediation plan therefore considers both what became wet and what the water contained.

That distinction can substantially change the appropriate scope of work.
